Islam, however, deems marriage to be a sacramental and a traditional union. It has been used as a tool to meet spiritual needs and worldly demands as well as being the source of love, companionship, and perpetuation of the human race. Islamic marriage or “Nikah” is considered to be a civil contract between two consenting parties with the presence of witnesses. Although customs and traditions vary in different cultures of Islam, fundamental principles are always the same.
